DEPARTMENT OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND COOPERATION

Consular Services are offered to South Africans abroad by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation through its Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates General. We are currently represented in 103 countries. Consular services in short , refers to the assistance we render to distressed/ destitute SA citizens and/or families of persons distressed/destitute abroad; support to bereaved families including administrative assistance (non-financial) with the return of mortal remains/ashes of deceased persons; assistance to families of prisoners (within the framework of Government policy); assist with transferring small amounts of money (within the framework of Financial Regulations) to detained persons abroad; as well as the provision of Legalisation services to members of the public. s

DEPARTMENT OF HOME AFFAIRS

The Department of Home Affairs deals with Immigration and Civic matters. The services that can be rendered include:

Assistance in respect of Immigration matters : visas for foreign national wishing to enter South Africa, applications for and renewal of passports, temporary residence, refugees, as well as financial assistance to distressed citizens abroad and repatriation back to South Africa.

Assistance in respect of Civic matters : identity documents, travel documents; birth, marriage and death documentation etc.

For more details with regard to immigration and civic matters, please contact the Department of Home Affairs for assistance. Where you may have specific visa related enquiries, please contact the nearest South African High Commission, Embassy or Consulate.

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

The interest in adopting South African children is ever increasing. The Department of Social Development deals with all matters surrounding adoptions, and will provide information on adoption procedures. For more detail on the above issues, please contact the Department of Social Development for assistance.

THE FAMILY ADVOCATE

Numerous queries are received in respect of the abduction of children. A spouse or partner leaves on holiday never to return with the child(ren). Abductions is regulated by the Hague Convention on Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction of 1980, to which South Africa is signatory. The Family Advocate deals with all matters surrounding abductions, and will provide information on what actions to take. The Family Advocate can be contacted at:

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT

There are many enquiries by South Africans travelling and working abroad regarding the "new" credit card drivers licences. Applicants must apply in person at licensing offices in South Africa. Please contact The Department of Transport for enquiries regarding drivers licences and Letters of entitlement.
